I doubt the validity of this story until more reliable sources can be cited – especially since USMC is denying it (also in the Time Mag link).

Yes the rules of engagement in Beirut in the early 80’s was no round in the chamber and you had to have permission to fire. But you had the ammo on you and it took all of a second to chamber a round. That of course changed as the fighting escalated.

I believe it. As an MP, activated after 9/11 to protect US interests, we were told to hide our M-16s from view as to “not alarm the public”.
As for our sidearms – M9s – “ammunition will be available in the armory should you need it.”. You know when they gave it to us? When the observant camera man asked where our magazines were.
Then we were allowed to insert a magazine but were not allowed to cheer a round.

My father served as a US Marine on Iwo Jima. I am glad he was “allowed” to use live ammo. He came back alive.
He was always and in all ways, a WONDERFUL human being. A true patriot, who deeply loved peace and this country. He believed in ALWAYS doing the right thing, fully living and embodying the values that make this country great. I am so proud to always be the daughter of a Marine. Debbie should know that Ambassadors are not impeached. They’re recalled, fired and if necessary charged criminally. Impeachment is used against elected officials.

I: WRONG! Federal Judges are impeached, and yet they are not elected. Yes, the Ambassador can be recalled, but only by the President or his Secretary of State. However, Congress can impeach anyone the Senate confirms. And an Ambassador must be confirmed. DS

The report is acurate, the OIC and NCOIC of the Marine Det are going to get relieved because they refused to to follow The Amb orders. After basically telling the Amb to fuck off we are not having another Tehran momement, ammo was issued and Amb hid in her office. The OIC and the entire Det will be relieved in a few days. Pentagon and State are drawing out the knives as we speak and there will be scapegoats. A FAST Company is relieving the entire Det as of Tomorrow.

It doesn’t surprise me at all, I knew about the absurd restrictions placed on US marines in Lebanon (under Reagan’s administration yes).

However it’s important to see the bigger picture here, namely even if the marines were not restricted by suicidal PC baloney rules, um how is all the ammo in the world going to stop a rampaging mob, armed to the teeth themselves, a mob that would have the tacit support of the Egyptian government? All that a sane policy here would mean, is to buy a little more time for the marines and embassy staff, who would be able to take a few fanatics down before the latter themselves would be killed, inevitably so, since they are obviously heavily outnumbered and outgunned. Yet the marines and embassy staff would still be killed (as what happened in Libya).

Let’s not miss that, as well as the point that the Obama administration AND most Republican politicians supported a policy that empowered these fanatics in the first place and made these disastrous stormings of US embassies inevitable.

Sadly, this report is true. Marines were allowed to possess weapons at the front gate, but they were condition four (unloaded/empty). Security officials are typically only permitted outside the gates with service pistols, hardly a match against automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades which our Americans confronted in Libya. This Administration would leverage a few American lives rather than risk an international incident where Marines kill some host-nationals and have the president scrutinized in the media. At the end of the day, they’ll fold a few flags, bury our dead, and Obama will give a sigh of relief Marines didn’t have the firepower needed to get our diplomats to safety; as they surely would have responded with force. Obama doesn’t get it, he thinks smooth talking will answer the world’s problems. The truth is this world has angry, extreme, and irrational thugs in it; who need to be forever separated from respectful and tolerant societies. But you’ll never see Obama in the trenches doing this work, men like him aren’t fit for it. I have fought in combat for this nation as my father did before me, and I will continue to do so solely for the hope that my efforts against radical extremists keep the explosions, hatred, and killing in the enemy’s backyard and away from my family’s doorstep.

I disagree w/ impeaching Ambassador Anne Patterson. Instead, all US embassy staff there should be replaced by Chris Stephens type Arabists, first from the State Department, and then from US universities.

In fact, just flood all US embassies abroad w/ Islamo-panderers from everywhere, so that there are few left in Washington. Best punishment for Anne Patterson is to leave her there, and provide no security – ask the Ikhwan to provide her security.}:) Let her meet w/ the same fate as Lara Logan or Chris Stephens. Look up a Marine by the name of Sergeant Major Dan Daly and the Boxer rebellion. He is a Marine Corps legend. The embassy complex was under siege for 55 days. Armed with a bolt action rifle and a bayonet, under sniper fire and several massed assaults, he defended the embassy against hundreds of Chinese fanatics trying to storm the place. Marine Corps legend has it that reinforcements arrived in the morning and found him with 200 dead in front of his position. Those men are still out there, we just need the political will to unleash them.

Ask any Marine who has had MSG duty and they will tell you that the Ambassador decides what the Marines can do to protect the Embassy. As one friend said “Some Ambassadors are from Texas and have the Marines armed to the teeth and have said to kill anyone who comes over the wall. Others are lefty peaceniks like this crazy lady in Egypt and want the Marines unarmed and hand them flowers or something”.

I think the President should announce and order all Marine security detachments to kill anyone who comes over a US Embassy wall. Opening up with a 50 caliber machine gun will stop a mob really really quick and make other morons think twice before storming a US embassy.

I do not know How the people in Egypt will assess her performance as an Ambassador of U.S? However prior to her posting in Egypt she was Ambassador of U.S in Pakistan. She had been here for 3 years. During her tenure in Pakistan she was quite popular and no doubt has performed her duties quite brilliantly. She did her best to improve the image of U.S before the people of Pakistan and gave a new direction to the U.S Aid and will always be remembered in Pakistan as a good diplomat. I appreciate her services in this capacity.
