These are American citizens who were denied the purchase because of a misinterpretation of the law. At which time did they state they would send these ipads to Iran? Very sad and Steve Jobs would not have approved.

As someone who deals with import/export laws, Apple is right. They can get into trouble from the Department of Commerce for selling goods which likely to be exported. If an employee has a reason to suspect an item may be exported, they are legally obligated to refuse the sale.

My Mac Mini got screwed up and they re-installed the operating system at no charge!

And whatever I needed, they shipped me on time.

I am an Iranian who has many many apple products and I live in US. I am one of the 1% top paid people in US and I live on Visa! I have many Iranian friends who work in Apple, guess what Apple give them free mac to work with. It is just an idiot racist person like you who refuses to sell items to an AMERICAN citizen!

I export goods and also can not EXPORT goods to Iran or Cuba but its a sad state when we are refusing to sell goods to AMERICAN CITIZENS who happen to hail from those countries. We say we want migrants to assimilate and this girl seems to be but is treated this way? Sad, and Sean DS may not work for apple but she is applauding this, I wonder if apple stores in Miami are refusing to sell to anyone they suspect are from Cuba

What part of the story did the young lady said she was going to take the product to Iran? This is stupid policy. I could be Iranian man trying to buy Apple products then and take them back to Iran. We are not at war with Iran. Congress hasn’t said so. We do have a blockade around Iran and cannot do business with people in Iran. I can’t imagine that would affect any individual living or going to school in America.

I will bet you that the young lady could get approval by asking as flooding Iran with satellite receivers and Internet capable devices is probably high on the Dept. of Commerce’s list of desirable activities. In fact they might even buy it for her…

In my city, near the place where I once worked, I noticed that there is a Persian Christian Church. I tend to be more trusting of Iranians who’ve jettisoned Christianity for Judaism or Zoroastrianism than of those who’ve remained Muslim.

If we were mindful that the threat to us was Islamic, the law would have been changed to recognize that. For instance, Iranian Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians are not a threat to America or Israel. Pakistani Christians or Sikhs or Hindus are not a threat to America or India. However, this gets more fuzzy in the case of Arab Christians, but aside from them, most non-Muslims in Muslim countries aren’t Jihadi time bombs waiting to explode.

I do wish Apple would slowly start moving more of their manufacturing back to the US, and get more aggressive about their PC/laptop business, since Microsoft is dropping the ball w/ that boondoggle called Windows 8.

But yeah, I’m becoming more of an Apple fan these days.

There’s a big difference between selling to Iran or to people you suspect will trans-ship your goods to Iran, and selling to people who just happen to be from Iran. There are tens of thousands who fled Iran after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 who settled in the US, including many Jews. The former mayor of Beverly Hills is a Persian Jew. Should they too be denied access to Apple products? I say no. (Full disclosure: I’m a (very minor) Apple stockholder.)

It’s good that Siri knows that Jerusalem is in Israel. Neither Google nor the State Department seem to know that. Since Jobs’ untimely death Apple seems, if anything, to be growing closer to Israel. Apple recently made a major investment there, buying flash RAM company Anobit. Their people are all Apple employees now, and the core of Apple’s first overseas development facility. But Israel still doesn’t have an Apple Store. Their products are imported exclusively by iDigital which (surprise!) is owned by Shimon Peres’ son.

This is ridiculous. How do you people applaud apple for this act of prejudice and racism?
It’s in the constitution that people are free to speak any tongue they want. Just because they were speaking Farsi does not mean they wanted to illegally export sanctioned goods to a sanctioned country. By this assumption since many people speak Spanish here, one can only assume that they might be wanting to somehow export goods from the US to countries such as Cuba or Venezuela, so they should be refused sale of all sanctioned goods!

This is a text book example of American ignorance.
If you guys actually do some research you’d find that the majority of the Iranian people (I’m talking 95% +) do not approve of the Islamic government over ruling them, (hence why they protested a 3 years back but unfortunately got shut down).
Why do you think there is so many Iranians in America? They immigrated here to get away from that government. Sure, some go back and forth once in a while to visit their family who may still be there.
These sanctions are supposed to hurt the government not the people!
There are many extremely successful Iranian-Americans who contribute greatly to this country and you guys should be proud to have them around.

Ace, I agree with you in you’re statement that a good majority of the folks in Iran are anti-Ahmadinejad, dude, none of us, including Debbie did NOT say that Iranians/Persians like yourself are terrorists and support the regime in Iran. And the samething can be said for a good number of arabic people, many of them don’t support hamas, hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood, etc. (I’m talking about a good number of non-muslim arabs, and yes a few non-muslim arabs support islamic jihadism). As I’ve said to another poster last night dude, if you want to be pissed off, be pissed off at Apple Company and not at Ms. Schlussel or any of us here, last I checked I’m not on the Apple Company payroll and neither is Debbie herself. And yes, there are some Persians/Iranians in this country who have done some good contributions to our society, I’m not disagreeing with you on that buddy. So just chill out, relax and UNDERSTAND where we are coming from with our views!

W/ all due respect – or not – that’s a load of hogwash. Islam is very much anti-US – in fact, it’s anti everything that’s not Islam. Iranians who are not Muslims are not anti-Americans. But Iranians who are Muslims are anti-Americans.

Cyrus the Great was not a Muslim – he was the ruler of the Median empire that embraced the religion of Zoroaster. Don’t conflate him w/ the Muslim savages who populate Iran today.

If the bulk of Iranians were to throw off Islam and become Zoroastrians, which was their original religion, I’d believe you. But anybody who remains Muslim is not to be trusted, and is an enemy. As it is, the last time Iranians tried having their ‘Green Revolution’, as Debbie pointed out here, they were actually split b/w one group of Mullahs and another, not b/w Islam and apostasy. Also, Pew polls have indicated a high degree of support among Iranians for both Hamas and Hizbullah.

Go to someone else w/ that lovely bridge b/w San Francisco & Marin County that you’re trying to sell. We’re not buying!

The problem here for Apple is that the laws are somewhat vague… If an Apple employee suspects that there is a chance the hardware may be exported to Iran then they are required to deny the purchase…

This is due to the fact that the prohibited nations (Iran, Cuba, North Korea etc) are not above sending people to purchase the items they want to Apple Stores…

BUT, this is unfair towards Apple because how do you define that there is a chance that the hardware will be illegally exported?!… Are Apple employees supposed to be clairvoyant?!…

Apple, most likely, instructed its personnel not to sell to any Farsi speaking customer just in order to be on the “safe side” of the law… It’s a bit of a broad comb but I can see Apple’s side of things… They don’t want to be hit with multimillion fines by the government…

The part that really pisses me off is that I have seen actual Iranian tourists purchase Apple products in Hong Kong and China… The US government should have another look at these laws!…

I agree and disagree on this matter. Yes, if the people speaking Farsi are American citizens were denied the purchases of Apple products, then that was wrong. However, seems Apple is the few companies trying not to skirt the import ban on certain countries like Iran. Unfortunately many US companies in the interest to make a dollar will sell highly sensitive material to many countries even vehement anti American ones.

BTW, I love Apple, won’t buy anything else and have been in their stores before coming to Israel. We have one reseller here. There is no reason for you or anyone else to assume that people of Iranian decent or of an Islamic faith are anti American. This is just plain discrimination. If the U.S. government wants to enforce its policy against Iran that’s fine. They can enforce that through the airport and travel laws.
