They actually seem like a very good couple, and on her subsequent interview, if you follow through the links, Chelsea seemed articulate enough. It’s possible, as she suggested, that she may have been putting in a lot of hours studying for finals and her “brain was fried,” as she put it. That can have the impact of impairing a lot of brain functions–like memory, visualization, computational ability, conceptualization, etc.–so that even relatively simple “puzzles” like this one seem complicated or difficult to understand.

But what about when someone is reasonably rested and alert? When you have problems answering some basic questions, then there may be a real problem. And indeed, that is the case with the people in the following example:

Even though she is stupid, he will still be banging her like a screen door in a hurricane later….which is why that kind of thing never gets bred out of the gene pool.
Also, think about this. The guy driving the car that made the tape is most likely supporting her. And, when she gets tired of him, and kicks him to the curb, he will still be supporting her. So, who is the real stupid one?

As for the girl in question, she has a predetermined way to measure drive time, she uses a base 60, ie one mile per hour. The problem is she does not remember to do the actual calculation, her base 60 merely gives her an approximation of ETA and it obviously has so fixated as her method of determining drive time she cannot listen to the question. her husband obviously knew of this quirk.

Debbie I don’t think she’s necessarily dumb so much as out to lunch. I think she just didn’t understand the whole MPH angle. And her guesstimate of 58 minute was impressive in a way. I estimate her intelligence as about average and she’s reasonably cute and she probably went to public schools so I can forgive her for being a ding dong.

There are thousands of variations on this shtick. “In what year did the war of 1812 take place?” “How long was the six day war?” “What weighs more, a pound of gold or a pound of sawdust?” etc.

He essentially asked a George Burns question, but instead of giving a Gracie Allen answer, she just sort of babbled incoherently. What he should have done next was just ask her something like “How much is nine plus seven?” If she were to give some answer other than sixteen, then we would know for certain that she is mentally retarded. However, if she were to just continue droning on and on about tires and running, then it would be much more likely that she has a substance abuse problem that needs to be addressed.

As an aside, I’d just like to mention that after watching and listening to him on various talk shows, I sincerely believe that David Arquette would also probably have a problem with this (and any similar) question.
