Don’t Believe the Phony “Poll” Claiming Israelis Oppose Action v. Iran

By Debbie Schlussel

There are phonies and there are uber-phonies.  One of the uber-phonies is Palestinian Muslim anti-Israel (redundant) University of Maryland professor Shibley Telhami, who just released a much ballyhooed “poll of Israelis” which claims to show that only 19% of Israelis support attacking Iran and that 54% of Israelis approve of Barack Obama.  It sounds like fiction (and is).  But the survey was given full court press in today’s Wall Street Journal by its anti-Israel Jewish reporter, Joshua Mitnick.

Shibley Telhami (@ the Palestine Center): His BS Poll Gets Thumbs Up From the Ghost of Yasser & His Iranian Patrons

Don’t believe the hype.  In fact, most legit polls show that even left-wing Israelis aren’t stupid about Obama.  They hate him.  And, in poll after poll, most Israelis support striking Iran and have for years.  So why the “change” in this poll?  Well, the man behind it, Shibley Telhami, isn’t just anti-Israel.  He’s anti-Semitic (and a tool of Obama–or maybe Obama’s his tool, take your pick).  Telhami, who regularly makes paid appearances at pro-Palestinian events and advises the Palestinians on attaining their “state,” is good friends with two openly anti-Semitic authors, Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer (who wrote a book questioning the loyalty of Jewish Americans).  It’s in Telhami’s and his anti-Israel, Jew-hating friends’ best interest if Israel never attacks Iran and if Americans buy into the phony numbers in his poll.  Telhami fancies himself the Muslim version of Tom Friedman, the New York Times portal of the pretentious.  But Tom Friedman is already the Muslim version of Tom Friedman.

Telhami allegedly surveyed 500 Israelis.  Who were they?  Were they “Tel Aviv Israelis” (generally, far leftists) or “Jerusalem Israelis” (far more conservative and nationalistic)? Did he include Israelis who live in the settlements (including parts of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish People), which he opposes?  What questions were actually asked?  The methodology isn’t known.  But there’s a reason this so-called survey was just released.  This past weekend through tomorrow is the meeting of AIPAC, the pro-Obama, left-wing “pro-Israel” lobby (which lobbied for a Palestinian State with Yasser Arafat and opposed states in the U.S. from divesting from companies that do business with Iran).  The AIPAC donors–who mostly favor Obama–want to boost the liberal Democrat President’s election year prospects among pro-Israel Jews who should know better but don’t and among other Americans who see a weak President in terms of national security (and everything else).  AIPAC has frequently invited the anti-Israel Telhami to speak because that’s how AIPAC operates.

And this phony poll arrived this week just in time for the AIPAC gang to bolster Obama and work against the harder-line (and tough-talking but do-nothing) Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, as he visits Washington for a woodshed lecture to (or from?) Obama on Iran.  Yes, the poll is all about undermining Netanyahu and any bold speeches or pronouncements from him that the Obama-Bush wimpy policy on Iran has failed for over 11 years and it’s time for action. See, your people don’t even agree with you, they agree with Obama–that’s the point of this BS poll that bears no resemblance to reality among the Israeli population.

Bottom line:  anytime you see the name Shibley Telhami’s name on or next to anything, know that it’s bought and paid for by the Iran-funded Palestinians (or his friend Barack Hussein Obama . . . or both) and take it as seriously as claims that Janet Napolitano is a straight chick.

Some assembly required for this despicable manipulation which is par for the course where Israel’s interests are concerned. Thanks Debbie…again.

The poll has given comfort to Israel’s enemies…look how many people posting online at Washingtonpost.com are quoting the poll.

Unfortunately, the press unquestionably swallows the poll. Why? Well, put it this way, among college majors, the only people with lower SAT scores than journalism majors are education majors. Dumb and dumber.

Pali Arabs that want Iran to attack Israel(probably the majority of Palis)prove what Golda Meir said about Arabs hating Jews more than loving themselves. In other words, they’d sacrifice many Arab lives in an Iranian attack on Isreal if it meant getting rid of the Jews.

Any weapon of mass destruction against Israel would kill Jews and Arabs. Many Palis don’t give a bleep.

The Zionist Organization of America(ZOA)is the true pro-Israel lobby in the US, not AIPAC.

S: ZOA is NOT any different than AIPAC, except smaller and much grayer in age. In the past year, they honored Detroit’s HAMAS Rabbi and have honored many such Jew-haters and enablers of Islamic terrorism supporters. They are a do-nothing organization and when they do something it’s to honor and legitimize Jew-haters and the enablers of Jew-haters. DS

Scott on March 5, 2012 at 4:29 pm

    Debbie,

It’s a real surprise and disappointment that ZOA has honored dhimmi Jews. I hope you’re mistaken.

It’s surprising because ZOA (unlike AIPAC)seemed to get it that Arab anti-Semtism is the root cause of the mideast conflict, that the destruction of Israel is their ultimate goal, and that the “two state solution” is folly.

The ZOA has been critical of both Obama and Bush in regards to US pressure on Israel.

Thanks very much for the background on Shibley Telhami @ the Palestine Center and Mitnick of the WSJ. This “poll” didn’t pass my smell test either, and the results and timing certainly seemed suspicious. Ever since I took my first course in statistics, I’ve learned that HOW a poll is conducted determines whether or not it is reliable, as the mathematics in poll-taking is actually relatively simple.

There are some old sayings about statistics that are worth noting here, and I may not have the precise quotations, but they go something like this: “If you torture the data long enough, the data will confess.” This means data can often be manipulated to yield the results sought. “Figures don’t lie, but liars will figure.” This quote by Charles Grosvenor demonstrates the importance of the INTEGRITY of the poll-taker, and, as Debbie has amply demonstrated–that quality is utterly lacking in this latest “poll.” “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics.” This famous Mark Twain quote is a little unfair to statistics, as it is not statistics that is to blame for lying statistics–it is the lack of integrity of the statistician which renders the lies, worse than damn lies.

I was wondering about the lack of detail about the polling procedures. Now I have a better idea of why this is the case. Perhaps someone will do a genuine poll on this topic.

I assume by now that all the fine readers here know that when Obama-Putin (I’ll be calling the Marxist this from now on because the only one as sloppy YET more clandestine with voter fraud and lies than Obama these days is KGB Vladimir Putin and his journey to rule Russia as long as he humanly can!) says something you should IMMEDIATELY think the opposite. He was just pleading his case about how he has worked so very hard for Israel when even I know that is NOT the truth. It made me sick…I can’t imagine how Jewish folks feel to hear that lying liar use that so he can get 4* more years and push the sword into USA one final time. Fundamentally changing what America was.

I hope the fine readers have been noticing how in-the-open the career Commies are now in 2012. Instead of hiding deeper in the shadows, they are out embracing the daylight. Antonio Villaraigosa is now the head of the DNC (the Convention and NOT the Committee, but with Debbie Blabbermouth-Schultz head of the Committee, is there really a difference?).

It’s all lying lies and cunning baits-and-switch started by the likes of itsy, bitsy, teeny, weeny George Stephanopoulis for the Obama-Putin regime. All they claim are lies and don’t forget it.

This AM Rose of “Quinn & Rose” listed the ways Obama-Putin has NOT had the Israelis back. It was a pretty good list (from the lesser of brains on the show…the whole show is Jim Quinn!!).

*Began Presidency with outreach to Moooooslims

*First TV Interview as Prez with Al-Arabia

*Deep bow to the Saudi King

*Visited Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt and skipped visiting Israel each time he visited those countries

*Received an award from the Saudi King

*Gave a speech in Cairo, a capitol of a Mooooslim country. He also asked for a STOP of the Israeli settlements during that speech. He also equated the Jewish holocaust to be how the “Palestinians” were treated. Delegitimized Israel in that speech.

*Obama-Putin did not shame Abbas for the celebratory honouring of a terrorist’s 50th birthday (he killed 37 Israelis)

*Mistreatment of B. Netanyahu at the WH

*76 Senators had to send a letter to Hillary Clinton to please stop mistreating Israel

*Increased US aid to the “Palestinians” and Abbas visits the WH

*Didn’t defend Israel regarding the Turkey flotilla and called on ISRAEL to apologize

*Robert Gates called Israel an “ungrateful ally”

*Obama-Putin has questioned Israel’s dedication to peace

*At the G20 summit, Obama-Putin got caught talking trash about B. Netanyahu to Sarkozy on an open mic.

*Obama-Putin wants Israel to go back to 1967 borders

*Israel was threatened with economic consequences if they did anything to Iran

*Obama delayed the sanctions to Iran’s central bank for as long as he could

Skunky on March 5, 2012 at 8:09 pm

    Excellent post, Skunky.

“ISRAEL, IF OBAMA-PUTIN HAS YOUR BACK YOU HAD BETTER CHECK IT FOR KNIVES!!”

Spot on. Before I read this post, I had the thought at least in regard to Obama having said at the AIPAC speech yesterday that he got Israel’s back, that if I were a political cartoonist, I would draw a cartoon in which Obama says to a person labeled “Israel” “I got your back” and have a knife and is getting ready to stab him in the back with it. With your comment quoted above, I would add Putin to that cartoon as saying after Obama, “As do I.”

JeffE on March 5, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Debbie Israel should have called for the free emigration for all Iranian Jews a long time ago. Still Israel should knock out the Iranian sites ASAP. Relying on Obama to protect Israel is like relying on King Achashverosh. And after the election if Ozero wins it will be like relying on Haman. Debbie I have to go to look for my Mordechai finger puppet now.

A1 on March 5, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Methinks that this poll interviewed Yossi Sarid & Yossi Beilin 250 times each. Or counted Stan Cohen – the Hamas lawyer – as an Israeli.

What makes it even more unbelievable is that all this is happening @ a time when even the Europeans (Germans, Brits) seem to be losing patience w/ Iran.

Only thing here – Israel would have to overfly Saudi Arabia to pull this off – there is no way Iraq, Syria & Turkey is going to allow them. More problematic is the fact that there are several sites in Iran involved in this project of theirs. Stuxnet may have had some success, but it can’t be replicated, and ultimately, there’s no alternative to actually bombing their physical sites.

Infidel on March 5, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I have to agree with Skunky’s outlook — a sad state of affairs, but there’s certain a very unfortunate pattern on the part of the administration and its allies.

I wonder if all the muslims that live in Israel and the surrounding areas have thought about what is going to happen to them when Iran has their bomb ready. Do they really think they will be warned to move out of they way? Are they all ready to be martyrs for their crazy cause? Or are they stupid enough to believe that the bomb will only kill Jews and stay within the borders of Israel?

Ender on March 6, 2012 at 12:13 am

If Israel were to take any action against Iran, it would be restricted to a series of bombings of their nuclear & missile sites, so that they couldn’t remain a threat to Israel.

This is the sort of action I’m fine w/. I’d also be fine w/ the US taking such action against Iran, except that as Afghanistan and Iraq demonstrated, they won’t. If they did invade, it would be followed by a nation-building exercise, terror attacks on occupying troops, a troop withdrawal followed by a new Islamic regime. Incidentally, I don’t buy any of the claims of Iranian expatriates in the West who claim that the majority of Iranians have turned away from Islam.

The purpose of any war should be to destroy the enemy’s ability to wage war, and stop @ that. If you judge Afghanistan just by what happened in 2001, it was a success. If you judge Iraq just by what happened until the day Saddam’s statue in Baghdad was pulled down, it was a success. What’s made both these countries military debacles for the US has been the nation-building attempts by the US, w/o grasping the perversive role of Islam in both these countries. Same would apply to Iran as well.

An Israeli action would be totally different, since there is no way Israel could occupy Iran the way the US could occupy Iraq. Just bomb their sites and pull off, and let them deal w/ the damage.

Infidel on March 6, 2012 at 4:05 am

    >If Israel were to take any action against Iran, it would be restricted to a series of bombings of their nuclear & missile sites, so that they couldn’t remain a threat to Israel.<

How do you know? Does Israel have the capability to do something like this without the aid of another country?

How do you know Israel has not taken "any action" against Iran already? How do you know that Israel has not attacked Iran already?

I see so many people talking foolishly about this, it makes me sick. We don't know what Israel's actual capabilities are and the only thing we know is that the IDF wants it that way.

The poll says Israelis are against a military strike against Iran WITHOUT US APPROVAL. I think that's nice. It shows the Israelis like us and nothing more.

An Israeli military strike mission against Iran could be badly jeopardized if the U.S. gave public approval. So I really don't worry my little head about these things.

There's no telling if, or how Israel can mount a limited, unilateral (unaided), military strike against Iran's nuclear weapons program in one mission that would lead to a full crippling of Iran's program.

Moreover, there's reason to speculate that any such attack would lead to retaliation by Iran's proxies in Lebanon. Repelling those attacks without U.S. support is problematic.

The news media has issued a lot of very irresponsible reports indicating that the Israelis are anxious to launch a military mission against Iranian nuclear weapons sites. This is ridiculous. Israels civilian and military leaders will exercise very sober judgement on the matter and I advise ignoring speculation in the news media.

There is NO Santa Claus on March 6, 2012 at 7:32 am

Yes this poll has simply been dismissed here, it’s barely on the radar even. Most everybody I know in Tel Aviv (liberals included) recognize the necessity of bombing Iran. In fact everybody I know SANS exception.. (and that includes loopy liberals, my own extended family members among them unfortunately)

Larry in Tel Aviv on March 6, 2012 at 5:02 am

“Telhami allegedly surveyed 500 Israelis. Who were they? Were they “Tel Aviv Israelis” (generally, far leftists) or “Jerusalem Israelis” (far more conservative and nationalistic)? ”

Jerusalem is indeed “more conservative” religiously, but not necessarily more nationalistic. The Jerusalem of today is not the Jerusalem I knew in the 1970s. It is today far more “haredi” (ultra-Orthodox) and includes a much larger Arab population. Between the two, Jerusalem is now majority non-Zionist, a large portion of which is positively ANTI-Zionist.

How representative of Israel’s Jewish population the poll sample was, I leave to specialists to determine, but it’s clear Telhami’s pollster relied on “leading questions” to get the response he wanted. J Street’s pollsters use the same technique.

As to Telhami, it’s hardly surprising, given his sentiments, that he’s been a frequent guest on NPR’s “Dianne Riehm Show”. Riehm, for her part, has described herself as a “proud Arab-American” (I heard it). She’s of Lebanese background.

Raymond in DC on March 6, 2012 at 7:32 am

It would be hard to believe such a poll unless one assumed the Israelis to be suicidal. Iran has made it amply clear in word and deed that as soon as it is able to do so, it intends to destroy Israel. The Palestinians seem to be too dense to realize that such an attack, due to their proximity to the State of Israel, would mean their end as well. I guess Hamas does not bring up this detail during its rallies in Gaza. Also, the only way that Iran could truly keep its obliteration promise would be through the use of an atomic or nuclear devices. No other weaponry would ensure a first strike success for Iran. Any Iranian attack failing to accomplish this would leave them open to an unlimited Israeli response.

Worry01 on March 6, 2012 at 8:02 am

Polls and statistics can be manipulated to make the data fit whatever position the pollster wants them to. For example, they say the poll results were from 500 people surveyed. However, and this is conjectural, they could have originally surveyed 3000 people and threw out the results they didn’t like to come up with their statistics based on 500 people. Also, these pollsters know how to word their questions so that people answer in the way they want them to, even if the people are absolutely against whatever topic is being discussed. For example, the above poll states that only 19% of Israelis support attacking Iran. How did they pose this question to the people being polled? Did they phrase the question like “If Iran gave up all their nuclear activity, agreed to be occupied by NATO, adopted the U.S. constitution as their own and became a Judeo-Christian country where there were no muslims in any type of political office, would you support Israel attacking Iran?” I have a hard time believing most polls these days, most are biased and full of errors.

bobguzzardi on March 6, 2012 at 10:29 am

Prior to the last elections in Israel, I had been hammering the senior staff at jpost.com that their poll data was being hacked. I still have the daily screen shots in my archives. What was happening was the poll data initially reflected, as Schlussel points out, the inherent right-wing nature of the Jewish people and our determination to fight and survive. As time progressed for a given poll, there would be a sudden statistically unlikely shift in the polling data to favor the left-biased choice selection in the multiple possible answers. The margin of the shift would hold constant then until the close of the polling session.

I maintained screen shots over the duration of the given polls showing the statistically unlikely shift in the polling responses for a given question.

Six months before the elections, jpost.com put in a cryptic query graphic of the type used for financial transactions on-line. The query question was “Are you human?”. After that security measure was added to the poll, the polling response remained right wing. The people of Israel discovered that their fellow citizens wanted to fight and survive rather than roll over and die.

Come the elections, although Kadima got 28 seats and Likud got only 27, it was clear that Tzipi Livni would not be able to form a viable coalition government because the over-all result favored the right wing voters. Shimon Peres, the uber-left nut job was forced to make a rational decision and charged Netanyahu with forming the next government which has held to this day.

We managed to get a relatively non-suicidal government in place by the slimmest of margins, but we did succeed.

Jpost has since changed management, Black is no longer in charge, and the new suicidal dhimmis at jpost.com redesigned the site to favor dumbed down news of the left and destroyed their own epistemology by changing the directory structure of their site and in the process loosing all links to previous news articles. The challenge question to the poll data has been removed so its again open season on hacking the poll results.

But Schlussel’s point is accurate that if we are educated and have internalized the nature of our enemy, then we prefer to fight and survive.

philososky on March 6, 2012 at 1:55 pm

philososky, “hacking”? Since when did Israeli “news sources” not manipulate poll results? Some of this goes on everywhere, but the extent of it in Israel goes well beyond the malodorous average.

The only action Israel has taken against Iran to date has been Stuxnet. Had Israel actually bombed Iran’s nuke sites, it’d have been known – like in the case of Syria.

Also, I think the Israeli public recognizes that Obama is anti-Israel, and as Debbie mentioned, even the Left wing Israelis hate him, which they didn’t in case of Clinton (although I don’t have any idea of how Clinton was any better). As long as Obama is running things, the Israelis have to do anything and everything they do w/o his knowledge or approval.

I also dispute your claim that if Israel attacks Iran’s nuke facilities, there’d be a blowback from Hizbullah. If I understand right, Hizbullah is right now busy in Syria trying to save the Assad regime from collapsing, b’cos if it does, not only does Hizbullah’s lifelines to & from Iran get cut off, but also, a Sunni regime in Syria is likely to support Lebanese Sunnis is destroying the Shia, and Hizbullah w/ it.

As far as Israel’s military capabilities go, I haven’t been following it of late. I do think that Egypt, w/ all the military hardware they’ve had from US during the Sadat & Mubarak regimes, is adequately equipped to fight Israel, but given the civil war in Syria, I don’t think that there would be a Shia-Sunni alliance against Israel at this time

That would be the cherry on top of your raw Jew hatred. Stay classy now and your loose mouth and bigotry will take you far in life!

NormanF on March 8, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Get lost and STFU jackass, and thanks for exposing yourself for the jew-hating anti-semitic neo-nazi you are you scumbag. And you’re WRONG about Israel occupying Palestine, dumbass there is NO state or country called Palestine, it’s made up and a fraud just like you you anti-semitic asshole. And f**k all of you anti-semitic neo-nazi’s, anti-semitic muslims, etc., when the grim reaper comes calling for you when you’re time is up, you’ll rot and decompose in hell!

And BTW, DS is an excellent attorney you moron, and show me and everybody some proof and evidence that her law license is temporary suspended? You can’t provide NO type of proof because her law license is NOT suspended, if it were suspended she would’ve written an article about it dumbass. Those who’ve filed grievances against her in past have either lost the case against her or dismissed because they had NOTHING to back up their claims. So get lost you fraud and I’m assuming that you and you’re imaginery friends NEVER filed a grievance case against the lady?

When you die sometime in the future, I will not shed any tears for you buster, and you’ll rot in hell where you originally came from and we’ll deal with little anti-semitic assfaces like you’re vile and disgusting ilk you fraud!

Arnold, huh? Translates, perhaps, from the Arabic Ahmed.
A prime example of a soul in ruins with no mental framework in place to process any semblance of human decency. Sputtering, ignorant, frenzied tripe vomited out by a lunatic whose fantasy of fun and ultimate gratification would be to toss Jews into an oven, babies first.
Run proudly to momma, Arnie, with a copy of your vile posting. Surely she’d like to display it in a prominent place on the living room mantle.

lee, of the lower case "l" on March 8, 2012 at 7:08 pm

LOL at the mentally ill anti-Semite, just another demon being controlled by evil.

Like you said Sean, all Nazis go to hell in the end!

Tom on March 8, 2012 at 7:09 pm

Skunky, Tom and Lee with the smaller “L”, while Ms. Schlussel is enjoying the jewish holiday of Purim and taking a little time off from blogging, etc., you have trolls like that “Arnold” screen-name trolled here, exposed himself for the anti-semitic hatemongorer that he really is.

For that DS-stalker, atleast I’m brave and tough enough to show my real-life name in my profile, unlike you who’s hiding behind an anonymous name, & hiding safely behind you’re PC-firewall, etc. This lunatic troll has been banned and blocked here in the past by Debbie herself and he/it uses different names and try to be clever and a slick BS-artist!

Sean R. on March 8, 2012 at 7:33 pm

That’s right Sean, this idiot has been maligning you, DS, Norman and JG for over a year now and uses a different name (and computer!!) every time. He’s an angry, sicko loser.

So regulars, make sure IF you do use your real name here and agree with DS, this moron will post hateful crap about you and your family. He acts like he is hurting those he names but we have been on to him and he only makes himself look like the loon he is!

Protect your privacy. Then again, who cares what this POS says in his deranged anger. We’ll pile on him and call him out as the loser he is.

Skunky on March 8, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Thank you Sean R., Skunky, Tom and lee with the lower case “l” for telling the troll whose latest name is “Arnold” what the score is. There is one thing that I want to add to back what Sean R. wrote on March 8, 2012 at 5:13 pm had said:

Genesis 12:1-3.

I want to wish Debbie and all the Jewish readers here a belated Haapy Purim. Here is Debbie’s column on Purim from last year:

http://tinyurl.com/6s66t25

And to be somewhat on topic, here’s one thing that Debbie wrote in that column:

“And there are a lot of other great things about the holiday and the story behind it that are so fascinating, including many parallels to today: a foolish but powerful king who then was Xerxes, but today is Obama; and a sworn enemy of the Jewish people whose descendants are the Muslims we face today. Sadly, there’s a dearth of Esthers or Mordechais and too many Islamo-pandering masses of my fellow co-religionist Jews who would have sold Esther and Mordechai down the river to get a smile from Haman.”

That was true then, and sadly, almost a year later, nothing has changed.

Speaking of sexual slavery under Islam, its not just Flipino women in the Middle East who face torture, starvation and death. A New Zealand woman related a harrowing experience being married to an Egyptian Muslim man:

It was hell on earth. She luckily managed to get a divorce and make it home safe and sound to her native country. Marry a Muslim guy at your own risk!

    where’s schlussel?–Good question. I’m asking that, too.

Americans need to become more sophisticated. Polls come up with any answer they were paid to come up with.

I’m shocked, SHOCKED to read that Napolitano isn’t straight. Next your’ll be saying the same thing about Janet Reno!
……………….on a serious note….Netanyahu knows better than to trust the islamocommunist in the White House. Thank G_d for men like Netanyahu. By the way did you see the news clip of Netanyahu and Stephen Harper of Canada walking together? Two REAL world leaders.

As you knopw, the current occupant of the White House has not visited Israel – but has visited thirty muslim countries. He gave a typical obamaweasel answer at the “Press conference” when questioned about this. Now we have a Harvard “Professor” friend of obama to add to the list of anti-semites obama admires. Let’s see….the professor, the two reverends, wright and Sharpton, let’s not forget farrakahn.

You are mentally ill, but you are also a stalker that needs to be medicated or in jail. Probably both. Please moderate the comments.

I am an Israeli and I know the poll is meaningless. Iran is dicussed every single day and the only one who ‘s voice you should pay attention to is Avagdor Lieberman because he is saying what Bibi should be saying but is thinking. As for our former Mossad head he has a beef and a political future and most Israelis see him as policking and not speaking the truth.

As for the poll about Israelis suppoting Obama, Israelis love America and think of the US Constitution and American values as truely holy scriptures. If you askt he question – “do you like obama” or “do you like obama, president of the USA” you’ll get vastly different results because of this pro-USA sentiment.
