OWN seems to consist of an odd array of programming with little coherence. It is hard to build a network around your ego unless you have a captive audience. I just wonder when the money will run out and the cable companies dump this paean to vapidness? Its demographic sweet spot is probably those suffering from senile dementia who are parked in front of a television set at nursing homes.

It’s called “metacognition,” i.e., “thinking about thinking.” And it does not mean that your metacognition – in Oprah’s words: your awareness about thinking – is your true self or your authentic self. All it means is that humans are capable of self-consciousness, of observing their own thought processes. Next up: Oprah looks in a mirror and decides that her image is her true and authentic self. After that, she will mistake an image of Gayle in her rear-view mirroe for the true Gayle!

Sorry Deb – I’m not completely on board here. Eckhart Tolle has many helpful insights that eclipse most other latter-day and even modern-day self-proclaimed gurus. Even where his work illustrates rehashings, they’re usually very well communicated, and explain many other former attempts (by “snake oil” gurus) in palatable and easy-to-understand doses. I agree that it’s unfortunate that he chose The Lady Winfrey as one of his exponents (and I wouldn’t be surprised if he regrets it as well), but, that said, I would encourage everyone too become familiar with his work, by reading at least one of his books. Unless one goes in with his/her guard up, I’m quite sure that they will be glad that they did.

It’s easy to laugh at Oprah and minimize her intentions. Her mistake is attempting to simplify what is apparently simple, “metacognition” as Ken calls it. But this process of shifting the awareness is not an easy or practical thing to accomplish. People don’t do it ordinarily.

Most people are functioning from their ego level of awareness, the “I” which is absolutely necessary for survival. But the ego also makes a person angry when things don’t go their way or when they don’t get what they want when they want it.

Sometimes it’s helpful to have the ability to step back and see the bigger picture — that’s what Oprah is actually talking about. We know we are more than our egoistic desires and reactions and we can develop our minds to maintain that awareness.

She’s trying to be a meditation teacher, she should stick to show business.

This is my first time at this site. Looking through, I’m sure that my views are different from what this site represents.

However, I must say that I agree with the I agree that this is pure crap. Unfortunately, my bff is going for it. Hopefully, God will open her eyes and see it for what it is, bunk.

I never could understand why people follow her “teachings”. I mean she is very wealthy, but she doesn’t seem to have good personal relationships.
