To me, this is the most interesting sentence in the whole article. What’s conspicuously missing in this piece are words from the young woman’s surviving relatives. I would love to hear what any of her immediate family has to say about the whole thing. Did they approve of her entering the contest in the first place, or was it something she did behind their backs? If she DID enter the pageant with their blessings, what do they have to say about what their religion just did to their daughter? If they DID NOT approve of her participation, then are they on the side of the murderers?

And exactly how did the murderers know she was a Muslim? “Katya” is an extremely common Russian name, and gives no indication of her religion. It would appear that the attackers were obviously familiar with her and her family. Perhaps they all attended the same mosque.

In short, this article is missing a lot of pertinent information.

My take to my own question is Katya Koren was murdered not so much because she took part in a beauty contest but because she lost. Would Rima Fakih have suffered the same fate if she hadn’t won? I think yes, she would have.

Having “their” woman lose was an affront to their male honor that had to be rectified at all costs. You just don’t lose to the infidels. If you do, it needs to be avenged.

No great mystery here. And for that Koren paid for it with her young life. The appearance of honor trumps human life in Islamic culture.

Worldwide, indeed.

I seem to recall a beauty pageant (Miss World, I think) that was to be held in Nigeria. This so enraged many of Nigeria’s Muslims (its northern half is mostly Muslim) they engaged in riots that ultimately cost a few hundred lives. The pageant was relocated.

Israel, in contrast, regularly participates in such contests. The ultra-Orthdox may not approve, but there are no riots. They even won once or twice – hardly surprising; beautiful women in Israel are not uncommon.

The fact is is that this is a sad story, she was so young and very attractive looking and her life was taken away by a muslim beast who’s nothing but a “koran-thumping” lowlife.

Like I observed, in oriental cultures, the appearance of honor matters more than anything. Losing honor is akin to being sentenced to a living death.

Honor is more important to Muslim men than the sanctity of a human life.

Firstly I want to say how sorry I am to have had this story been made aware to me such a sad loss of a young life, may peace and blessing be upon the young woman and her family.

Now I am a Muslim, I am also a uk beauty queen.. Although I competed in many beauty pageants winning many titles and even holding my own pageants over the past few years, however all of this was before I converted to islam although I was also learning while I was competing after converting I have gave up pageant life not because ‘women are oppressed and weak in islam’ but because we are taught that we are so respected by men of islam we do not want to be seen as sexual objects and tempt men with our beauty or encourage jealousy upon ourselfs but to respect our body and beauty and not seek fame or wealth from it, this is only scratching the surface on why we choose to cover there are many other reasons all to protect, respect and love the women who islam teaches are not weak or slaves or to be beaten as many uneducated people seem to think but we are to be loved, respected and any Muslim man will tell you how paradise is at the feet of his mother (yes a woman) and how they are so many teachings on how men should love, protect and respect their wife’s .. So those who think islam teaches anything to do with violence towards women or murder being ok are so far wrong it is infact the oppersit so when making such comments people should take time to research islam thru correct sources such as the Quran and they will surely change their opinion and most possibly their religion.

I want to make a very strong point that Muslims are NOT perfect but islam is so when you hear of a Muslim doing wrong that is not islam that is the person who is.
I ask when a Christian commits a crime such as murder do you blame that man or do you blame Christianity? Again I stress muslims are not perfect but islam is.
What I say may offend and annoy but I am letting people know how blaming islam for Muslims crimes is incorrect as these Muslims are not following islam correctly so please try to understand this, again as a Muslim beauty queen this story fills my heart with sadness and I hope crimes such as this come to an end.
