Sex & the Pity: Kim Cattrall Does the Mentally Disabled

By Debbie Schlussel

A few weeks ago, I told you about “Meet Monica Velour,” a movie starring Kim Cattrall of “Sex and the City” fame, in which she plays an aging porn star.  As I noted, the movie–previously entitled “Miss January”–was subsidized by the Michigan Film Tax Credit, receiving nearly $2 million from Michigan taxpayers.  The subject matter of the movie is sleazy enough.  But even more disgusting is the fact that JARC–the Detroit-based Jewish agency for the mentally disabled–is using the movie as a fundraising effort, complete with a special in-person appearance by the senior skankizen Cattrall, tomorrow night.  It’s beyond sleazy.

Sleazy: Agency for the Mentally Disabled Uses Porn Star Themed Movie to Fundraise

JARC–which used to stand for Jewish Association for Retarded Citizens–is now called Jewish Association for Residential Care because the word “retarded” is now politically incorrect.  The organization does excellent work, with many mentally disabled and mildly retarded beneficiaries of its help getting jobs, buying homes, and otherwise living a higher quality of life they likely never would have had.  Mentally disabled people from my synagogue are functional adults and not on public assistance because of JARC.

That said, it’s very sleazy–and especially disrespectful to the less fortunate and somewhat helpless JARC clients–that the filthy “Meeting Monica Velour” is the way they raise money.  I have not yet seen the movie, but as I noted previously, here is the description of the movie from the Tribeca Film Festival:

For Tobe, a nerdy, horny, frizzy-haired cineaste who doesn’t quite fit in with the average contemporary teen, the pinnacle of womanhood is Monica Velour (Kim Cattrall), a soft-core actress who reached the zenith of her career in the 1980s. When Tobe learns that his love idol is headlining hundreds of miles away at the Gentlemen’s Petting Zoo in Indiana, he drives off with carefree glory—in his grandfather’s (Brian Dennehy) used Weinermobile, no less—filled with the hope of meeting her. When Tobe defends Monica’s honor against ruffians who taunt the aging erotic starlet off the stage, he lands a pity invite into Monica’s trailer. As the two begin an unlikely friendship, Tobe’s unripe romantic impulses entangle with her messy life as a struggling single mother embroiled in a custody battle for her only daughter.

JARC is supposed to be an uplifting organization, lifting up the less fortunate to achievement. How sad it has such little regard for those clients that it uses a porn-star inspired movie like this as a high-dollar fundraising event.  There’s something seriously wrong with that. It’s embarrassing.  Clearly, JARC officials and execs have no concept of class and decency.

Maybe their less mentally fortunate clients could teach them a thing or two about that. Kim Cattrall–the author of dumb sex books and the star of much crap–certainly cannot.

Kim Catrall has something in common with GOP-ers…she is gravely pathetic and desperate!

The broad is like 99 and is still trying to come off as 29. She may feel sex-ay, but to those watching her, she comes off as pathetic…and wicked old.

There is nothing more sad and constraining as some old hag trying to hold on to long-gone youth with a kung-fu grip. LET. IT. GO. If she were a guy going bald, I’d say “let it shine”.

It is more healthy to embrace age than to slowly turn into The Bride of Wildenstein. Everyone has their chance. Every flower has it’s turn to blume and then fades. That’s life.

(Oh, and I think the mentally disabled should disown the word “retarded” because good peeps would never use it in a disparaging way for those with disabilities. It should be 100% used to describe those who have all their mental capabilities, but for some reason, can’t or fail to use their brain to capacity).

It is amazing how such a no talent has been just keeps going on and on. Cattrall is becoming as disgusting as Cher in what she is doing. As for the charity, I doubt that it will earn much of anything off of such a film. It also might make some of their donors think twice before contributing again, which would sadly harm the innocent.

Kim is 55 now. Could she just bag it now, and spare herself the embarrassment and us the nausea of such a performance?

I’ve always though Crow T Robot’s “Ode to Kim Cattral,” summed it up well.

But how about the film, “A film Unfinished” or something like that?

…”in which she plays an aging porn star”

“Plays” an aging porn star?

Really? I’d say that way past prime in that biz.

After 40, you’re washed out. Loves handles, wrinkles and varicose veins don’t look sexy.

They can make you look younger with various movie tricks but they can’t fool the audience.

Too bad the JARC was taken in by this movie.

CornCoLeo has the comment of the week so far. That was hilarious!

Let Skunky play the part.

I’m nearly deaf and I cringe in embarrassment at stuff like this…. I’m not a prude but couldn’t the Jewish Association find something more appropriate?

If they want to tell a love story fine, but this isn’t a suitable subject.

Not if you’re Jewish.

It is pretty weird, and shows how this sort of thing has gone mainstream.

And to think that those who see nothing wrong with JARC hooking up with Ms. Cattrall in such a way are the first to complain about Jerry Lewis’ use of muscular dystrophy children (a.k.a. “Jerry’s Kids”) in his fundraising pitches (though one has to wonder . . . ).

Lot of comments here from people who go red when thinking about mommy and daddy ‘doing it.’ You think sex ends when you turn 25? Grow up.

nir lieu on April 12, 2011 at 5:46 am

Um, I think you may be taking it too personally. People are commenting because it is unbecoming to be the archetype of an oversexed oldie, and that is the archetype that KC has owned.

I can’t speak for anyone here, but as for me, sex is personal and private and should be kept between married couples…no matter how old they are.

I don’t appreciate exhibitionists…even more so if they are ancient. People just don’t want to see that.

My hope is that all healthy married couples have very fabulous sex-lives…even if they are septuagenarians. And I hope they keep it private, too. It’s dignified, healthy and bonding when that is so.

I can’t find JARC on CharityNavigator.com. Are they nonprofit?

I find it the political correctness of the name change more troubling than Kim Cattrell and the subject matter of the movie, which I agree does not portray Jewish values.

I agree with CornCoLeo. Kim Cattrall playing an aging pron star is pure and simple type casting. She’ll be like Leonard Nimoy after Star Trek….this’ll be the only gig she can get.

Sean M. on April 12, 2011 at 10:41 am

What a bitter crowd, in defence of kim her own father is in a senior facility with dementia.Maybe this is her own way of supporting an event that she can relate to.The only gig she can get? seen her in noel cowards private lives on londons west end stage. And as cleopatra in shakespeares antony and cleopatra at the liverpool playhouse both to critically acclaimed reviews.Make an effort to see her on broadway this year and you will find she is most certainly the sharpest tool in the shed.

    postmanmick7683 on April 12, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Ew. I live in Indiana and don’t like the thought of them pretending she is in the state. Hope they didn’t film here.

Disgusted in IN on April 12, 2011 at 11:02 am

Hardly surprising she would find such a role substantive; ever seen her interviews? Never been the sharpest tool in the shed….

Phineas on April 12, 2011 at 11:59 am

Kim. Hwere is some free advice: Take the money. Retire. Have a nice life.

Herbster on April 12, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Kim may be 55, but she can pass for 45. And she does have a soft side, witness her guest slot on “Who Do Think You Are?”

Seek on April 12, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Seek, I can easily pass for 35. Now I am not insecure about my age but some people are.

NormanF on April 12, 2011 at 2:18 pm

This movie looks awful. HOWEVER – to those commenting above –
– it is shallow and childish to designate a particular age and assume a person’s appeal to others must be “over.” Folks who are older than you are can be attractive to others (even if not to you, my children). Some of the sweetest romances and marriages happen for older couples. One day, sooner than you think, you will find an older person looking back at you from your mirror. You will have all of the same emotions and romantic notions that you have always had. You will then not agree with the disrespect you have shown here today.

You both make excellent points.
Romance doesnn’t end at nineTeen and yeah, keep that sex stuff private please.

theShadow on April 14, 2011 at 12:26 am

I think she is beautiful. But in my mind she never did “Sex in the City” because I never watched that trash. She will always be “Gracie” from “Big Trouble In Little China” for me.

That woman was sweet and pretty. Anything she did after that was just for the money. Even I have done things “just for the money” that I’m not proud of.
