VICTORY! Schlussel Readers/FB Friends Get Israel Restored to American Express Map

By Debbie Schlussel

Sometimes a few people can indeed make a difference.  You did it.  You got American Express to restore Israel to its map, and I’m happy to announce it on Buy Israel Goods Day.  I’d like to thank all of you, my readers and friends, Facebook friends (join me on Facebook), and Twitter followers (follow me on Twitter) for getting American Express to restore Israel to its list of countries on the map.  On Monday, I alerted you to the fact that American Express removed Israel from its map and list of countries.  A number of you contacted American Express to express your outrage at this Map of Hate, and I also got our friend, Fred Taub of Boycott Watch and author of the new book (about the Muslim/Anti-Semitic boycott/divestment/sanctions campaign against Israel) “Boycotting Peace,” to contact American Express officials.  As a result, American Express restored Israel to the list.  And it is now there.  Thanks to all of  you who pursued this.  We can make a difference.  And you did.  Thanks again.  Sometimes–though not nearly often enough–our outcries are heard. Mazel Tov & Yasher Koach (May Your Strength Grow–a Jewish congratulation).

I’m glad they put Israel back on their map, but sorry, American Express, you are not back on mine.

I don’t forgive American Express for publishing such a hateful map. Maybe if they do other things to make up for it, I’ll reconsider.

I agree with Zsuzsi. Happy the put Israel on the map, but why the heck wasn’t it there in the first place??? Rhetorical question.

What was their reason for excluding Israel?

Jonathan Grant on March 30, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Jon, I wish I knew. It made no sense. As lawyers you and Debbie know Amex was in violation of federal boycott law. They’re not allowed to do it.

Getting a large company to do the right thing was important. Its good to see this inexcusable omission was rectified in a day and age when pro-Israel victories are few and between.

    Yasher Koach!

I love it when PC gets kicked in the teeth. Good on ya Debbie.

(Btw, if the Red Wings could JUST ONCE beat a team to help my Flames, would it be too much to ask????)

I’m actually surprised that our calls worked. I am still disturbed that American Express was unable to explain to me why they had excluded Israel and created a map of such a hate conglomerate. I told them that I would not be using my card again until Israel was again on their map but now as others above have posted, I am still upset that they so blatantly did this and have no intention of giving them my business right away.

They damn well better have put Israel on the map! It is ILLEGAL for American corporations to boycott Israel. Just in case you didn’t know. There are corporations that have paid several millions of dollars in fines for doing very minute things that complied with the Arab boycott of Israel.

In fact, it is a cruel JOKE that Israel-haters target Caterpillar to encourage that company to boycott Israel. Caterpillar can’t even TALK to them without breaking the law. (Do these self-described “human rights activists” ever protest against the companies that make construction cranes used to publicly hang thousands of people in Iran?)

I think a smart lawyer could make quite a fuss looking into whether the anti-Boycott legislation passed in the 1980’s can be extended to other organizations; especially those that are incorporated. Is the PCUSA a corporate entity? How about some private Universities? I think some of these 501C3 organizations actively pursuing a boycott of Israel are corporations and can be investigated for breaking the law. Maybe the anti-Boycott legislation extends beyond corporations. It’s been a long time since anyone pressed the issue, but as far as I know, the law is still on the books.

Great job, Debbie! (by the way, CAT is on my list of Support Israel stocks to buy. So is TEVA and Israel Cell. Yes, I do own shares of all.)
