EXCLUSIVE: So Long Church/State Separation: University of Michigan to Fund Muslim Footbaths

By
**** EXCLUSIVE: Must cite and/or (that means you, and ) ****
Forget about the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state . . . at least when it comes to mosque and state.
When students return in the fall, the University of Michigan-Dearbornistan is set to have Muslim footbaths in at least two locations.
And your tax funds are paying for it.

Last week, Kay Pepin, University of Michigan-Dearborn Director of Facilities Planning, and Terry Gallagher, a U of M-Dearborn spokesman, confirmed to me that plans are in the works to build Muslim footbaths (they refer to them as “foot-washing stations”) in both the University Center and Fairlane Center buildings at the university.
When I asked why the footbaths were being installed, Gallagher told me that this is “an accommodation to a significant portion of our student body and their friends and visitors in accordance with our mission.” He said that it is a growing trend with Boston University, Cal State-Fullerton, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Washington University of St. Louis, all installing footbaths. “We wanted to be part of that trend in accommodating Muslim students.”
But when I asked Gallagher what portion of the U-M Dearborn is Muslim, he said that the most recent information the school has is from a 2004 survey of incoming freshman. The survey only identified 11% of students as Muslims, whereas 37% of incoming freshman were Roman Catholic. When I asked if there was any accommodation or money spent on Catholic students, he could not identify any.
Gallagher said the foot baths are the result of “years of ongoing negotiations with the Muslim Student Association.” The Chicago Tribune exposed the radical Muslim Student Association (MSA) as an American branch of the Egyptian terrorist group, Muslim Brotherhood, which took part in the murder of Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat as well as the shootings at the Temples at Luxor.
Gallagher insists that he’s confident that “none of our Muslim students is involved in terrorism.” But last year, I received numerous death, rape and torture threats against me, my parents, and grandparents from University of Michigan-Dearborn student , a Lebanese Shi’ite Muslim. Ms. Elzein was visited by the FBI and admitted to making the threats. , another Lebanese Shi’ite Muslim, used University of Michigan-Dearborn computers to send me rape, torture, and death threats in the name of Hezbollah. His home was raided by four FBI agents, and he admitted to making the threats.
And last week, –a student who was Secretary of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Texas-Dallas–was convicted of illegally possessing firearms when he attended a Muslim terrorist training camp and sought to kill Americans.
The University of Michigan MSA has a Muslim Accommodations Task Force, which was headed by Nadia Bazzy of the infamous Hezbollah-supporting Lebanese Shi’ite Bazzy family. Many Bazzys have been involved in Hezbollah there–and here. And the MSA Muslim Accommodations Task Force has more goals in mind:

Ramadan Iftar Accommodations; Eid Holidays; Prayer Room and Break Accommodations; Faculty Sensitivity Training; Jummah; Surveys / Advocacy; Halal Food

The MSA of U of M-Dearborn says that a “Reflection Room” was established for Muslim students, at MSA’s request. I wonder what would happen if Christian or Jewish students went there to pray or hang out.
Gallagher confirmed that University of Michigan-Dearborn Vice Chancellor Robert G. Behrens made the decision to install the footbaths. Behrens was the sole decisionmaker. He did not have to go before a committee of University Regents to get the approval or consult with anyone else.
Behrens refused to speak with me regarding this Unconstitutional waste of tax dollars on behalf of the “Religion of Peace,” but his secretary, Judy Modelski, had some interesting talking points to try to dissuade me from thinking this was a Muslim footbath. “It can also be used for changing diapers of and washing babies,” she told me. “And there’s a third use, but I can’t remember what it is.”
But spokesman Gallagher confirmed that there is no other use for the footbaths, other than for Muslims to wash their feet before prayer. You’d think they’d get their stories straight at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Regardless, what mother would wash her baby in a deep bath where people washed their feet and the baby could drown? And what person would wash their feet in a bath where diapers had been changed? It simply doesn’t make sense.
In a letter to an angry alumnus, Vice Chancellor Behrens wrote that the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor construction, in 1841, of a chapel makes these Muslim footbaths okay. But that was a non-denominational chapel where anyone could go for any reason, even for non-religious purposes. As U-M/Dearborn spokesman Gallagher acknowledged, these footbaths are being built as an accommodation to Muslims and no other religion uses them.
When I asked Gallagher why a religious accommodation was being made for Muslims, he informed me that if another religion approaches U of M-D, it will consider the request. But universities are constitutionally barred from endorsing a religion or even two religions.
The footbaths, so far, will cost $27,000 to install. But count on it to cost more. Since only one set of footbaths is being installed at each of the two locations, Gallagher confirmed to me that each will be installed in only one bathroom. That means that, in order to comply with laws against gender discrimination, each sex will be entitled to a footbath in its respective bathroom. Expect the cost to double to at least $54,000–$54,000 of tax money spent for a religious accommodation in violation of the separation between church and state.
That money is coming from the University of Michigan-Dearborn general fund. That means, if you are a taxpayer, you’re paying for them, as the general fund is made up of federal and state monies and paid tuition fees.
$2,000 of that has already been spent, paying architectural firm Niagara Murano, LLC, of swanky Birmingham, Michigan to “design” the footbaths. When I asked why an architectural firm was needed instead of a plumber, Gallagher told me that an architect was consulted to make the footbaths compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Amazing. They care about compliance with all of the other laws, just not the most important one–the Constitutional prohibition of establishing a national religion.
I asked Gallagher if he’s aware that these footbaths are likely to be the subject of a lawsuit by some brave Michigan taxpayer, who detests being forced to fund Islam and the demands of an American manifestation of the Muslim Brotherhood.
He said, “We’re prepared to defend that if it happens.” That means more of your tax dollars at work for the “Religion of Peace.”
The question is: Where and when will a Michigan taxpayer finally say enough is enough and file suit? Will the ACLU take the case? (Fat chance.)
And when will America wake up?

This is an outrage! Where’s the ACLU? – Well, the only time they’re around is when they selectively file motions in the pursuit of their agenda to weaken America.
If these 7th century barbarians want to wash their feet and nostrils before they pay homage to Satan, they should carry around a bucket and some water. Or, they can open a hydrant and accomplish two things;
1. They can wash their body parts,
2. As a result, pollute the state of Michigan, which would make Love Canal look pristine by comparison.
This country prospered for 200 years (1776 – 1976). Since then, over just a period of 30 years, America has been under siege and become unrecognizable. Thank you LIBERALS and feckless Republicans.

Thee_Bruno on May 30, 2007 at 10:45 am

One of the most common lies that Muslims tell us is that they have no intention of forcing their religion on us. I would say compelling the tax-payer to fund their foot-fungus fest qualifies.
When I lived in Egypt, even the company I worked for didn’t provide foot baths. Whenever I went into the men’s room, there they’d be – shoes and socks off, foot up in the sink. Lovely sight.

stevecanuck on May 30, 2007 at 10:59 am

How long have Muslims been attending American Colleges? Decades? So, suddenly in the year 2007, they absolutely cannot live life without a footbath at a University? How in world have they gotten along until now? I guess minority rules when the minority is sue-happy and the majority are yellow-livered ostriches.

Kelly A. on May 30, 2007 at 11:30 am

Don’t you love the way Liberals here and in the media only began to coddle Muslims AFTER they killed us on 9/11 and AFTER hundreds and hundreds of suicide bombings of innocents; the most dispicable act a human being can commit?
How about an armpit bath? That would be more appropriate.

cankelz on May 30, 2007 at 2:08 pm

Can anyone use these footbaths or are they to be used Muslims only? I would go ahead and use them as I saw fit. All I know, when I was in Morocco years ago there were no toilets, let alone footbaths. They used holes in the ground.
ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Judicial Watch, where are you?

lexi on May 30, 2007 at 2:09 pm

The third thing that the baths might be used for would be to quench Fido’s thirst.
Not sure how popular the practice is today, but when I was attending college it was common for students to have dogs. And, I am not sure how far these footbaths are from the ground (I mean they are foot baths, right?) so there is the likelihood that Fido will take a sip.
Good grief, can you imagine the uproar? One kid throws a ham sandwich in front of a Muslim High Schooler in Maine(?) and everyone goes ballistic. Just wait until a dog sips from a footbath. Into the mix comes PETA. LOL.
Will google ‘Muslim footbaths’ to find out how different they are from sinks and why a standard sink couldn’t be used. Wait a minute, that still sounds nasty. LOL.

Here’s a recent press release from the ACLU.
ACLU Announces Settlement in Challenge to Government-Funded Religion in the Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Program the ìSilver Ring Thingî (2/23/2006)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: media@aclu.org
BOSTON — The American Civil Liberties Union today announced a settlement with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in a case challenging federal funding of religious activities in a nationwide abstinence-only-until-marriage program, the Silver Ring Thing.
“We are pleased that the government has agreed to stop using taxpayer dollars to fund the Silver Ring Thing’s religious activities,” said Julie Sternberg, a Senior Staff Attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. “The ACLU supports the right of Silver Ring Thing to offer religious programming, but it may not do so using government funds.”
WHERE IS THE G-DAMNED ACLU NOW? Liberals. They seek to protect Muslims who physically kill us, those who want Sharia law to govern the world, those who commit acts of terrorism. The ACLU advocates violatiion of the U.S. Constitution…but only when Muslims do it. If a Christian tries it, the ACLU will spare no expense to quash it.
Sickos.

I wonder if footbaths on college campuses are more common than you think. I attended Southern Illinois Univ at Carbondale from ’93-’97, and there was a foot washing station on the second floor of the student center. It caught my attention because of the funny looking sign on what appeared to be the door to a janitor’s closet “Wudu for Salat”, meaning footwashing for the Salat prayers.

NEVER again will I donate money to U of M in any capacity. The proximity of PC Ann Arbor and Dearbonistan is dangerous. Time to move?

JSobieski on May 30, 2007 at 2:44 pm

Firstly: thank you Debbie for yet another example of your diligent efforts to expose the relentless advance of muslim sharia across our once beloved heartland. This most recent Islamic infringement of democratic ideals is particularly note worthy because it also exposes an extreme hypocrisy and subordination of our principles of ëconstitutional separation of church & stateí by petty bureaucrats, such as Mr. Behrens, when confronted by a loud & vocal minority ñ the MSA. I am a magna cum laude graduate of U of M Ann Arbor (BFA í77) and am appalled that my Alma Mater would stoop to such petty and dangerous patronization and I will definitely be contacting Vice Chancellor Behrens concerning this outrage. Thank you once again, Debbie, for shinning the light of truth on the ever present darkness and barbarity of the advancing mohammedans.

Don’t look at them as 2 new foot washing stations. Look at them as 2 new URINALS!!! At least that’s what they will become if I ever see them…

And now this:
ACLU sues Boeing for CIA prisoner transfers
“American corporations should not be profiting from a CIA rendition program that is unlawful and contrary to core American values,” Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, said in a statement.
AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-DEARBORN SHOULD NOT BE VIOLATING THE U.S. CONSTITUTION BY USING TAXPAYER MONEY TO BUILD FUCKING FOOTBATHS FOR MUSLIMS! SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!
WHEN ARE THOSE ACLU BASTARDS GOING TO FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, HUH? FILTHY TRAITORS!

After reading this story, I feel like becoming a buckeyes fan (even though I’m maryland terripins all the way). Now I see why the buckeyes are more liked in this country than the “Suckerines”: Becuase of crap like this. First Chris Webber, now Muslim Footbaths! They’ve gone from calling timeouts when there isn’t none, to calling for muslim footbaths when there is a seperation of church and state.
When I see the Buckeyes take on the Suckerines agian, I hope Ohio State fans chant something insulting to “Bitchigan” about allowing “tooooolerance” for the muslims with these footbaths.

Squirrel3D on May 30, 2007 at 5:53 pm

I also was in Egypt for a time and never saw any footbaths. Step by Step our way of life is disappearing. Ditto Thee_Bruno.

OneIrishJew on May 30, 2007 at 6:26 pm

All I can say is I-Told-You-So. First Kansas City airport was attacked by the footbathers. But the conquest for a Caliphate State in America is not going to stop at the content of these obtrusive jihadists. It doesn’t take an excess use of high power artillery to drive a country down to its knees. Exspecially when you have the ACLU and the p.c. jihad sympathizing liberals working hand in hand with their shariah promoting cronies. How come there is no push ( or bitching) for the seperation of Mosque and State. Even Turkey, a predominate secular country understands the danger these dirty feet brown kaffiyeh throwbacks pose to their democracy and are doing whatever they can to prevent these small amount of radicals from superceding Turkey. If the liberals are so concerned about religious fanaticism in America, then they ought to divert their attention to these muslim fanatics who want to install footbathes in public facilities if they had to balls to do so but for the perpetual wusses that they are, they will step aside and allow the the footbathe installation to precede. I wonder what the liberals would do to defend themselve if they one day wake up to a wielding knife to their neck by their islamic buddies. How will they be able to protect their heads from being sawed off by those who they thought were their friends when until now, they’ve been delusional to the beastial nature of these desert primitives. Will they choose between stretching their necks for these barbarians to practise their beheading ritual on or will they take a reality check and stand up to these bloodthirsty throat cutters who took the liberal’s compassion and reciprocate it with jihad all in the final moment of their lives? Liberals beware: your p.c. agenda may one day be used against you. Learn from those who collaborated with the enemy only to by betrayed by them at the end.

That wikipedia link to squat toilets is just too much! The idea that someone wrote pro & con arguments for squat toilets is beyond belief.
Now let’s see someone write a pro & con list for muslim foot baths and post that on wikipedia. See how long before that gets challenged or pulled.
Can I just ask a dumb question? Why do you need a footbath in the midwest? This is not the desert!
Don’t they shower?
For once I agree with Eminem – where is the mikvah? The apocalypse is upon us!

To understand the ACLU simply read the writings of their founder Roger Nash Baldwin, a man much admired and honored by President Carter.

…and to think, the Salvation Army is being banned because of their Christian history. WTFO?

This is a widespread problem: count Minneapolis Community Technical College as the next school to follow suit. The coffee wagon at the school was told to suspend playing Christmas Carols during the “holiday” season as it was “offensive” and staff at the college were reminded to not have anything Christmasy out on their desks during that time of year and were reminded of the separation of Church and state. However, they are now putting in footbaths to accomodate the followers of the Religion of Peace. Cute, huh? This has got to stop! Any ideas?

Literally unreal. This won’t be stopping any time soon…you can take that one to the bank. keith ellison’s pathetic speech to his muslim crowd was very telling on what muslims plan to do….they gonna show us the right kind of justice….whatever that meant (I have an idea but I’d rather not think about it).

Highrise on June 1, 2007 at 2:36 am

Loser, I am all for a solution. Our muslim friends have a solution in mind for us.

steve ventry on June 3, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Wow.
The university made a practical decision that enough students were performing their ablutions to warrant an accomodation — footbaths.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
This blog makes it clear that a portion of our society is looking for any small reason to spew their ugly bigotry.
I am indeed worried about the future of this country, and it’s not because of Muslims in Michigan or Virginia — it’s because of hate-filled morons like the majority who have posted here.

Judywalk on August 7, 2007 at 8:32 am

Does the religious component of this accommodation funded by taxpayer dollars really so easily elude you? This is not bigotry; this is a justifiable backlash against a public university which has made no plans for religious accommodations for other religions. It is the university and its politically correct minions like yourself who are engaging in bigotry.

Tory on February 24, 2015 at 9:00 pm

Practice your religion, play your music, beat your wife, and I won’t care. But when your actions intrude upon my world, I’m going to act. When your music is too loud, I’m going to ask you to turn it down, when I see you beating your wife, I’m going to leave you as a broken wreckage on the floor, and when your religion of peace requires, and even DEMANDS, the wholesale slaughter of innocent men, women, and children, I’m going to be pissed!
I don’t want to get involved in a flame war here, but when Judywalk says that I am hate-filled, I think I have a very good reason to be. Let’s all not forget the news reels of people singing and dancing on top of their houses, on the afternoon of September 11, 2001. I sure as hell won’t. And every one of them will pay, whether in this life, or the next, they will pay.
The ACLU advocates the separation of church and state. The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States pretty much says the same (under SOME interpretations), but this issue is CLEARLY aimed at appeasing the Muslim minority, by installing a fixture that can only be categorized as a religious fixture. And the powers-that-be at the American Civil Liberties Union (read: American hate group) are on the side of the state imposing a religion on the people. Seriously, can anyone find a single reference in the last 10 years where the ACLU has stood up and defended a Christian issue?
Bah! Sometimes I just don’t know what to think. Are we on the road to salvation, or is our road the one paved with good intentions?

USMC-1371 on August 7, 2007 at 9:22 pm

you are so racist and hateful.
“The MSA of U of M-Dearborn says that a “Reflection Room” was established for Muslim students, at MSA’s request. I wonder what would happen if Christian or Jewish students went there to pray or hang out.”
Nothing would happen. You would like something to happen. You rejoice in controversy.

Latisha on August 8, 2007 at 3:57 pm

i am a white male and i go to u of m Dearborn. i have never even seen a “reflection room.” it’s not really that big of a deal, the Arabic kids don’t force their religion on me the same way i don’t force my lack of religion on them.
actually, going to u of m Dearborn has been a good experience for me because i have learned a lot about appreciating another culture. i have made a lot of Arabic friends here. that doesn’t mean i’m going to move to Iraq or Pakistan and start a new life, i just have more respect for Muslims. not all Muslims want to blow up “infidels,” by the way. not all German people hate Jews, but Hitler killed 6 million of them. in fact, it was his religion as a roman catholic that started his hatred toward Jews. do Jews discriminate against roman catholics? no, because Hitler was a religious extremist, just like Osama.
what I’m trying to say is basically a message of live and let live. try to be more tolerant of other cultures rather than blindly hating them.

Offend a Radical – Urinate in a Footbath
As a staunch supporter of the Constitution, which expressly states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…,” I am embarrassed by many of my countrymen who are bending over backwards to accommodate radical Muslims by installing religious ritualistic devices in public places.
As a Muslim, I am embarrassed, as well, by many of my co-religionists who attempt to impose their radical religious agenda on American society by installing the same ritualistic devices in these same public places.
As an American Muslim, I am personally offended when I read about footbaths on public property, i.e., municipal airports, state colleges, etc. I think that the best way to combat these blatant Constitutional violations is by turning the aforementioned footbaths into urinals.
Our government seems to have neither brains nor balls to combat the advance of stealth Gihad, but I believe that American people are smart enough and courageous enough to handle the threat of Sharia.
I am asking every American patriot to place this (see image) or similar note above every footbath located on public property, then take a picture and email it to us at INFO at REFORMISLAM.ORG.

OH GOD OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE PAYING FOR TWO FOOTBATHS, CAN IT GET ANY WORSE!? If you knew anything about Dearborn, you’d know that it is a city with a HEAVILY arabic/muslim population. The university here is no different. They are simply catering to a large portion of their student body. They could have done so in a much more drastic fashion than having two footbaths installed on campus. I don’t honestly even know what a footbath is, but I’d imagine that it’s not terribly expensive. This is hardly even a news story. Get over it. You should try focusing on real injustices that occur daily just a few small miles from Dearborn, in Detroit, or anywhere else for that matter. As for the footbaths, live and let live, as has been said.

This is the consequence of the University morphing from an institution of instruction and research into one which attempts to be the nanny-state to students, providing extensive non-academic counseling, catering to every student whim from luxury apartments and name-brand restaurant dining to professional sports entertainment (face it, the Big Ten is a pro league), big name speakers (all, of course, uber-liberal), and complimentary condoms and sexual awareness counseling.

The in-loco-parentis doctrine for the University died years ago. There is no reason for any of this.

It’s time for the University to focus on the core missions of teaching and research, and get out of the auxiliary fields. Let students organize their own activities at their own expense, and without government funded facilities or support staff. Let religious communities (Islamic, Christian, or others) do their own thing on the same basis as any other organization – in off campus facilities without institutional support.
