Was Out Sick w/ Horrible Migraine

By Debbie Schlussel

Dear readers, sorry I didn’t post anything yet today, though I had much to post and say.  I awoke this morning with the beginnings of one of the horrible migraine headaches I sometimes get and which I’ve had since I was a teen.  Sometimes, if I take medicine quickly enough, they get knocked out in a couple of hours.  Sometimes, they last two or three days.  Today’s was a killer.  I was violently ill all over the place and couldn’t even keep water and saliva down.  So, I stayed away from my desk and my computer and tossed and turned in bed for hours, hoping to get rid of it.

frownyface

Thank G-d, the headache is now going away, and I hope to have new stuff up later.  Thanks for staying tuned.  And sorry for the brief recess.  These migraines are beyond my control. And, as always, I really appreciate your support.

Migraines or no migraines, we still love you Debbie….

I feel your pain. I missed your new posts, but pray you feel much better. I am a fellow sufferer of those monster migraines!

Brenda Pieczenik on October 15, 2009 at 9:41 pm

As a fellow migraine sufferer, I know what you are going through. I use to take shots for my migraines but had to deal with the “hangover” from the medication the following day. Now, I stopped taking the shots and have been able to control them fairly well with diet and exercise, but I was still getting at least one a month. Finally, I ended up getting a Botox shot and so far so good. Never knew that getting a Botox shot would help me with my bad migraines and make me look so good at the same time. 😛

PatsPFS on October 15, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Ohhh so sorry. I have migraines also, they are quite debilitating. Unless a person has had one, they can’t truly appreciate the pain and nausea.

Rocky on October 15, 2009 at 5:35 pm

I’m sure you’ve had tons of suggestions about what to do with migraines. The only reason I am writing with a suggestion is that a friend I work with told me that his “severe headaches” eased a lot after he changed the overall font size on his pc . All of a sudden his eyes felt better and his headache went away.

S: I am always open to any and all suggestions on eliminating migraines. Nothing seems to be the complete panacea. Thanks. DS

Your health is more important than this website. Stay home and take of yourself.

Buddy Crabttree on October 15, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I had one once. OMG! I actually drove to the hospital, got the shot, and drove home.

NEVER DO THAT!

goldenmike4393 on October 15, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Debbie:

Rest, do not do the blog for a day or so. Your health is more important. If things do not improve, see if someone can get you to the emergency room.

Sorrow01 on October 15, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Hope you feel better soon. BTW- I have heard the same thing as PatsPSF about Botox providing some relief for sufferers of chronic migraines.

Dont Tread On Me on October 15, 2009 at 6:29 pm

So sorry Debbie hope your feeling better. I can relate totally, thankfully I have not had a migrane in about 8 years….. They are the worst.

sharon on October 15, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Just cross the bridge to Winsor and get a bottle of 222s.

Bob S. on October 15, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Sorry to hear it Debbie, I used to have them quite a lot. Have you tried Maxalt (the ones that dissolve on your tongue immediately) – GREAT STUFF, they work in 20 minutes, highly expensive, but worth every cent! Take it easy.

CJ on October 15, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Praying for you. GOD willing you will be fine.

TAKE CARE.

Daniel. on October 15, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Deb, sounds like you had a wing ding dinger of a headache (And I don’t mean from the fascist left). I wish I knew what to do for you.

Bob Porrazzo on October 15, 2009 at 7:06 pm

Dear Debbie:

I had no idea you suffered from migraines. I’m so sorry to hear that.

May the Creator of the Universe, the Gd of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob guide you to a complete and speedy recovery so that you can function as good as ever (especially) since you are a valuable member of our team of Pro-America/Pro-Israel activists.

I’ve never had migraines, but I have lived with moderate to severe pain for the last 10 years. So I know it’s no fun when you hurt. Just kick back and rest. Don’t worry about posting anything until you feel up to it. Get better soon!

White Rook on October 15, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Cutting out red wine (and aged cheese and chocolate) cured mine. I had nibble of some gorgonzola some 20 years since my last migraine and felt the aura of one approaching. They’re no joke, I know. Try checking your diet history for anything that might be a common preceder of them.

DS_ROCKS! on October 15, 2009 at 8:11 pm

I am sorry to hear about your migraine…I suffer from them too.
Excedrin Migraine does help me, sometimes I take one tablet before I go to bed if I have a stressful day to prevent a headache, because I usually wake up with my migraines. Doing this has really made a difference for me…

djnfla on October 15, 2009 at 8:29 pm

I know how you feel; I had them for years. Unfortunately they are genetic, related to hormonal changes, and don’t slack off until estrogen decreases. Thank G-d, there’s good meds out there. I recommend Vicodin, but only by script, and only if your Dr. is willing to keep count with you so you don’t over-do or get addicted. I’ll pray for you.

psych37@twitter on October 15, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Hope you feel better now Debbie.

Here’s news to give you a fresh bout of migraine – I already felt my head spin…. Kareem Shora from ADC has been selected by Janet Napolitano as Senior Policy Adviser for the DHS. News just keeps getting worse and more Arabs/Moslems keep entering the DHS filling up government positions that are supposed to keep us safe!

Get a prescription for Maxalt. It is incredible. Kills my migrains but the cost of the medication gives me a headache!!!!

Al on October 15, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Hope you are feeling better. I hope you are back in the game Motzi Shabbos! Be well, DK

DK on October 15, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Hey Debster,

I usually get headaches when I eat something I’m not supposed to. OK, junk food, ya’ happy?

Anywhoz, my first question is: what were you doing and/or eating BEFORE the migraine comes on? I know you’re kosher but could there be some “hidden” ingredient that sets them off?

Or was there residual tension from waiting for Electric Boogaloo 2? Man, I’ve been waiting to use that one for ages…

Seriously, apply Occam’s Razor, here. I’ll be prayin’ for ya’…

KyleNYC on October 15, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Debbie, I hope you are well enough to blaze away from the migraine pains now. 🙂

Bobby'sBrain on October 16, 2009 at 12:24 am

Been away from computer all day. Sorry to hear about your migraines. Hope you are better by now. Had a girlfriend before who had migraines and couldn’t bear to watch her suffer. Really hope you got better.

CaliforniaScreaming on October 16, 2009 at 1:06 am

I get migraines infrequently, baruch HaShem, but I get them and I know they’re hideous. I’m glad you’re feeling better.

Miranda Rose Smith on October 16, 2009 at 3:21 am

It’s good to hear you’re doing better Debbie…

Orlin Bowman on October 16, 2009 at 9:22 am

I swear by the Excedrin Migraine caplets. Man I can’t tell you how many cluster head aches I’ve knocked out with them as well. Never had a 2-3 day spell though, that has to suck.

Joe on October 16, 2009 at 9:38 am

Debbie, a friend of mine told me she had used Gatorade to
relieve her migraines. Never had one myself, but what the
hell? Hope it can work for you.

Daniel on October 16, 2009 at 10:14 am

Get well soon Debbie. 🙂
The Gatorade remedy works. Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional “pain relievers”?

JR on October 16, 2009 at 10:59 am

Glad you’re feeling better Debbie. Love ya.

KrazyKafir on October 16, 2009 at 11:46 am

You have my sympathy, Debbie. I have had those types of migraines – the kind that would go on for days, with light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, nausea/illness, and where I thought if I banged my head against a wall it might actually feel better. I gave birth to my first child 2 years ago, and I haven’t had one like that since I got pregnant. I still get bad headaches occasionally, but none that could qualify as an actual migraine. I take Excedrin Migraine for the headaches I get now and it helps immensely. The only down side, for me, is that I can’t take them after around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. If I do, I won’t be able to fall asleep until after 1 or 2 in the morning due to the caffeine content.
My hope is that you never have another migraine.

KerryB on October 16, 2009 at 11:50 am

OK I know this sounds goofy; I have migraine/cluster headaches so bad that death seems prefable. Drugs just make me worse;
what I do:
1.sit in a hot tub
2.put ice on my head
3. do NOT do 1 &2 together
4. rub ben gay on the back of my neck
5. lock my self in a dark room; pull the covers over my head.

Max on October 16, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Glad to hear you’re almost over it. The MOST important thing is for you to take care of yourself, do whatever you feel comfortable with, but take care of yourself first. We’ll be fine, you’re first….

Anytime you need someone to look after you zip me an email I’ll be right there to tend to your needs gorgeous. I can be your male nurse

seahawker on October 16, 2009 at 1:13 pm

I used to get migraines – caffeine used to make them better. I had a bad one at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula and the doctor there injected me with aspirin and it worked! I was walking around in 105 degree heat as if nothing had happened.

JulieJ on October 16, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Caffeine is a wonder chemical. I take all my aspirin, tylenol, aleve, or advil with COFFEE.

Of course you must be able to keep food down… but caffeine is the secret of getting the med in FAST and EFFECTIVELY.

    goldenmike4393 on October 19, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Debbie,

Sorry to hear that you suffer from migraines. I am in that boat with you as well.

After self-medicating at first, I finally had to turn to my doctor for assistance. He prescribed Imitrex which works wonders for me.

I am fortunate that I get the classic aura to indicate that I have one coming on. I usually have 10-15 minutes to take some Excedrin (three) and then I follow that up with two more an hour later.

If that doesn’t work within two hours or so I head for the prescription stuff. At $28 per pill it isn’t cheap, but well worth every dollar when suffering.

I would like to suggest a book titled “Migraine” by Oliver Sacks. It is an excellent read and will, perhaps, shed some light on causes/treatments for you.

I have discovered that flickering/flashing lights ie strobes will trigger one and try to avoid those.

Again, glad you’re feeling better.

Aye Chihuahua on October 16, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Excedrin works because of the CAFFEINE.

    goldenmike4393 on October 19, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Debbie,

For migraines I take 3-4 Advil and it helps a lot. I have had migraines for years but as i age they have become less and less. I agree with the red wine comment…alcohol aggravates headaches. Good luck and stay well.

Chuck on October 16, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Hello Debbie— Try MSM powder regularly every day
Its a nutrient that may help

Regards

tommy on October 17, 2009 at 7:06 am

I suffer migraines with you, Debbie.
I have used Imitrex in the past…one side effect is weak muscle sensation. I now use dissolving Zomigwith virtually no side effects. Otherwise it’s three days of torture.
Best wishes.

Those things make you want to blow your brains out, lol. I thought I was going to die election day 2008, I never made it to vote. I spent the whole day on the couch from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. You’re telling me all these people posting here get these headaches, too?

Steve Ventry on October 19, 2009 at 12:52 am

I know the feeling. I’ve gotten headaches since I was very young. Within the past couple of years, they have gotten worse. I’ve tried every triptan (Maxalt etc) drug out there along with every prophylactic drug (Inderal, Topomax, Depakote etc), with no success. I now take Verapamil, which helps keep my headaches to one a day, instead of 3 a day. However, my headaches are either cluster or tension headaches, not migraines (they are still trying to figure it out).

Finally, my neurologist decided to send me to the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. They are supposed to be the best in the country. I have an appt in September. Wish me luck!

I hope you are feeling better! Maybe you should look into the same clinic I am going to.
